Invisalign Care in Anchorage

At Northern Smiles Orthodontics, Dr. Johnson and our highly-trained team strive to bring the best in cutting-edge orthodontic technology to the Anchorage area. We're proud to offer Invisalign, an alternative to braces that uses a series of clear, removable, and fully customized aligners to straighten your teeth. It's virtually undetectable, meaning you won't have to worry about the metal wires and brackets of braces.

How It Works

Invisalign aligners are made to gradually shift the position of your teeth in small steps over the course of your treatment. Each aligner is tailor-made to fit your mouth precisely at each stage of your treatment plan. After an initial visit with our office to determine if Invisalign is your best course of treatment, Dr. Johnson will create a detailed plan of a series of finely calibrated aligners, anywhere between 12 to 48, depending on your individual needs. You'll wear each aligner for about two weeks, only taking it out to eat, brush and floss. With each new aligner, your teeth will move gradually until they reach their optimal position - giving you the smile you've always dreamed of!

Invisalign® FAQ

We know you're probably brimming with questions, so we've compiled a list of some commonly asked questions and their answers.

Q. How often do I wear the aligners?

A. You should wear your aligners for around 22 hours a day, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss.

Q. Are there any dietary restrictions during treatment?

A. No! Because the aligners are removable, you can simply pop them out when you eat or drink. However, we recommend that you brush and floss regularly to maintain proper oral hygiene during treatment.

Q. Will wearing the aligners affect my speech?

A. As with any orthodontic treatment, there may be a short adjustment period - usually no more than one to two days. The more you wear them, the quicker your mouth will get accustomed to them.

Q. Will I experience any discomfort?

A. Patients commonly report some discomfort during the first few days after switching aligners, usually described as a minor sensation of pressure.

Q. Can I chew gum?

A. We recommend removing your aligners should you need to chew gum, as the gum will stick to them.

Q. Can I smoke with the aligners in?

A. Although we discourage smoking in general for oral health reasons, we discourage smoking while wearing the aligners as the smoke can discolor them.

Q. How do I clean my aligners?

A. The aligners can be cleaned by brushing them with toothpaste.

Q. Will I need to visit the office during treatment?

A. Regular office visits are usually ever five to six weeks. These check ups help to ensure your treatment is going according to plan.

Q. Will I need to wear a retainer after the treatment is completed?

A. All orthodontic patients are asked to wear retainers indefinitely after finishing their treatment course. Retainers ensure that teeth do not drift away from their optimal position.

Q. How long does treatment take?

A. Although treatment time varies depending on each patient's individual needs, usually treatment lasts between 6 and 18 months.

Q. Does Invisalign work for kids?

A. Invisalign Teen can be an option for children if their adult teeth, including second molars, have grown in.
